Give Me Back My Hometown

Throughout “Give Me Back My Hometown” by Eric Church uses imagery, allusion and first person point of view to convey a story about his hometown and the way it used to be.  He talks about how things have changed since a girl either left or passed away and how he wishes that things would be the way they use to be. I think that the song is about him asking his ex for help. The song is also talking about how he wishes his hometown was more like the way it was when he was living in it with her and how when he looks around he still sees her in it.

The song talks about things that he remembers and things that he used to do with his friends as well. For example, “My friends try to cheer me up get together at the pizza hut”. This is talking about how he used to go out with his friends when he was felling down about stuff. It is also saying that his friends were a resort for him and they were someone that he could trust things with. He uses a lot of imagery in his song as well, “All the colors of my youth, the red, the green, the hope, the truth”. These are all referring to things like money and hope for things to get better because of a break up or something happening in his life. He refers to a lot of this towards the end of the song as well. He talks about his life mostly throughout the song.

Eric also uses some allusion in his song as well. For example, “you can have my grandma’s locket, the knife out of my grandpa’s pocket” This is an allusion talking about stuff from his past that he is saying that someone can have. He just wants his hometown back with the way that it used to be before everyone came in and made it different. Later in the song, he says “Every made memory, every broken dream, yeah everything, everything, everything”. This is him saying that people can take what they want as long as he gets his hometown back with the one he loved. Even if he has to lose some of his pieces that mean something to him along the way.

Throughout “give me back my hometown”, Eric wrote the song in first person point of view to convey his story better. He talked about all of the things that he remembered from his past. He made references to some of the things in the song that he treasured and remembered more. Towards the end of the song he makes references to his grandparents and some of their belongings, “you can have my grandma’s locket, the knife out of my grandpa’s pocket”. This can have a few different meanings to it. It can mean that he is saying that he is willing to give up some of these things to get his hometown back. But it can also mean that, he is giving this things up to the one that he loves and misses and wishes things were different between them.

He doesn’t want to see things change in his old town. He also wants things to be the way it was when he was with the one that he loved, he misses her in a way. Things are different now because of this and he wants things to go back to the way it was. He is also willing to give up some of the things that he has to get back with that person. He also talks about the things that he used to do with her. He refers to them because he is upset about it and wants it to be different.

Throughout both Boston’s “Rock n’ Roll Band” and Pink Floyd’s “Have a cigar” both have speakers that have a certain type of tone and rhythm to them when they are singing the meaning of their songs.   

Song Analysis "Home"

In highlighting the relief of a traveler in “Home”, Dierks Bentley uses emotional, first person point of view, and the explanation of the country, to say the value of “The place we all call home”. The song comes from the point of view of a traveler who goes across the country, talking about how great the land that we call home really is. The song starts out by talking about how the land is very different in many ways, “from the mountains high, to the wave crashed coast”. The part of the song that say’s “Free, nothing feels like free, though it sometimes mean we don’t get along”, is saying that we feel like we are free.  But sometimes we aren’t because sometimes we don’t get along with everyone. The song then talks about how it’s “Been a long hard ride, got a ways to go”. Meaning that it’s been a long ride and things have been tough. But, we still have a ways to go, to keep the things that we have and the things that we fight for. The song then talks about how, “Brave, gotta call it brave, to chase that dream across the sea”. Talking about the brave men and women that defend our country and defend our rights as Americans. Many Americans sacrifice their lives to defend our country every day. The song then ends with similar lines from the beginning of the song. “This is still the place, that we all call home”. This is referring to the fact that we might have some things that we don’t like or don't agree with. The land and country is “Still the place that we all call home”.
